CENTER POINT — Volunteers at the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department will be celebrating the Grand Opening of their new station on Saturday, April 27 from 11 am — 2 pm at the new building, located at 170 Franklin Street in Center Point.

Community members are invited for a tour of the new station and the volunteers are excited to show off what the community support has made possible. There will be food and refreshments and a raffle for a Winchester 20-gun safe, a portable generator, and a pellet grill. Raffle Tickets are $5 each.

In September the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department moved most of the equipment and gear into the new station. They described the moving process on a Facebook post on September 16, 2024.

“This morning the Center Point Fire Department moved apparatus (fire trucks) and gear from the old station to the new station. This was a long awaited event that went very smoothly. First off, all the firefighters along with assistance from the Center Point American Legion raised our flag on our new flag pole at the new station. We then all proceeded to the old station to gather our turnout gear and pull apparatus out of the old station. After a little speech, the old ‘40 pumper led a few walking firefighters and all the apparatus from the old station to the new station. Once personnel and apparatus arrived at the new station there were a couple special moments to remember two past firefighters, Mike Peacock (44 Yrs of Service) and Roger Thomas (35 Yrs of Service) and then all of our current firefighters moved into their lockers. After getting settled into the lockers, firefighters pushed apparatus into the new fire station and put them in service.”

They also expressed gratitude for the numerous supporters in the same post.

Last week, 18 members of the Oelwein FFA chapter traveled to Ames for the 96th annual Iowa FFA State Leadership Conference, which spanned from April 14-16. At the conference members attended general sessions, member activities, and learned about future education opportunities.

On the first day of the trip members set up their chapter display exhibit. The purpose of the chapter display is to showcase an activity or an event that your chapter participates in or helps with.

The Oelwein FFA Chapter chose to show their work at Olde Tyme Christmas, helping load and unload the horse-drawn carriage; they received a bronze rating.

The second day was filled with general sessions where members listened to the 2023-2024 State FFA reporters give their retiring addresses, saw award ceremonies, and listened to the keynote speaker Nick “Sunshine” Tokman, who stars on the show “Deadliest Catch.”

He shared a message of resilience and the importance of being your own person and doing what you want to do, rather than changing your plan to suit the desires of others. Members also heard from Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig.
